Aping Language
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (October, 1992)
Author: John Dunn
Average review score:

Student
I've used this book to base presentations on ape-language research at university seminars. Having read every work that I that know of that partians to the subject, I believe there quite simply is no more comprehensive review of the research in one single book. One who is interested in the evolutionary origins of language will be offered an excellent start by reading Wallman's chapter on the history of the ape-language controversy. The rest of your investigation will unfold from there. Overall, I would highly recommend this work to anyone whom seeks to achieve a foothold in the literiture.

Baby's Animal Friends (Chunky Books)
Published in Hardcover by Random House (Merchandising) (March, 1988)
Author: Phoebe Dunn
Average review score:

Sweet Book is a Favorite
This book just goes to show that you don't have to spend a lot on expensive items in order to make your child happy! This sweet little book of baby animals, with a few little humans as well, is one of the books my daughter (11 months) goes for every time. She loves this book and when we get to the end, she'll turn it back to the start for us to read it over and over and over again. We like the book because the photos are good at depicting the animals, unlike some children's books' drawings which are sometimes lacking in authenticity. Out of the approximately 50 books that we have bought her so far, this is one of her favorites right now, and combined with other types of books, makes for a nice mix in reading for her age. I hesitate to add that the book did come apart, but we glued it backed together with some non-toxic Elmer's Glue-All, and if it doesn't hold, we'd actually re-order it. So that should say something about our recommendation.

Baptism in the Holy Spirit: A Re-Examination of the New Testament Teaching on the Gift of the Spirit in Relation to Pentecostalism Today
Published in Paperback by Westminster John Knox Press (July, 1996)
Author: James D. G. Dunn
Average review score:

Must Reading For Studying the Holy Spirit
I purchased Dunn's book to read a differant opinion of those of my persuasion in the Pentecostal Movement. I must admit that this book is very technical and if you are not familiar with Greek than you may want to avoid this book.

Dunn's main premise is that the Baptism in the Holy Spirit did occur in Acts as a "second work of grace" but this is only part of Jesus' plan of evangelism and conversion (Acts 1:8). The dramatic Spirit-Baptisms were simply God giving His sign of approval upon their conversions. Thus Dunn views the Baptism in the Spirit as a conversion/initiation experience (1 Cor. 12:13).

Dunn's book has become the standard reply by non-Pentecostals and non-charismatics. The book was written in 1970 and has since become standard reading in many evangelical colleges. Even those who do not ascribe to Dunn hold to his theological approach in explaining Spirit-Baptisms in Acts.

Published in Hardcover by University Press of Florida (T) (December, 1997)
Author: Marvin Dunn
Average review score:

Read it Today!
Dunn's book is a MUST READ for anyone who "truly" desires to learn the history of Miami. Black Miami is fantastically written and maintains the utmost quality and clarity. His work is short and snappy, based on fact and quickly gets to the point. It covers specifically the history of Miami, utilizing the Black perspective. Dunn intelligently separate his work into four sections. Beginning with the first Blacks in South Florida, ending with modern times. Dunn stresses various social, political and economic challenges that persons of African descent residing in Florida faced. He goes into extensive details with the 1980 riot, mentioning its origins and elaborating on what exactly took place.

In all, Dunn does an excellent job aiding readers to better understand the complicated inner politics of 20th century Miami. Black Miami in the Twentieth Century is certain edify one as to why Miami is in the position it is today.

The British Empiricists: Locke, Berkeley, Hume
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (June, 1992)
Authors: John Dunn, J. C. Urmson, J. O. Urmson, and Alfred J. Ayer
Average review score:

An incisive account of British empiricism
Reading the empiricists is a rare treat. Because of their style, Locke, Berkeley, and Hume seem to be more accessible to the novice and general reader than much of philosophy. However, the three essays included in this volume are welcome additions to the Oxford University Press's "Past Masters" series, and anyone reading this book will gain a greater appreciation for the empriricits. Highly recommended.

Brutality Garden: Tropicalia and the Emergence of a Brazilian Counterculture
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (October, 2001)
Author: Christopher Dunn
Average review score:

An indispensable overview of Brazilian pyschedelia
An outstanding history of the late -1960s surrealist-hippie rock movement known as "tropicalia." Although tons has already been written about Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and the other heroes of the tropicalia scene in the Brazilian press and academia, it's been pretty slim pickings in the English-speaking world... up until now, that is! Christopher Dunn, who co-edited "Brazilian Popular Music & Globalization," skillfully combines hard academic research with a relatively light, conversational prose. This is dense yet captivating material, as Dunn deftly explores the historical and philosophical connections to tropicalia -- an art movement that was originally conceived as cross-genre and multi-media -- and previous Brazilian movements such as modernismo, which was Brazil's homegrown 1920s variant of the "futurist" philosophy that swept through Europe in the early 20th Century. Dunn also deftly tells the story of tropicalia's explosive growth as a subversive, psychedelic musical genre, and the harsh political repression it was met with by the dictatorship which held power from 1964 to 1985. This is a vital book, of interest to the many newfound fans of this wild musical style, or to art historians tracking the worldwide path of dada-ism and surrealist art. Highly recommended.
